Overview & Mechanism of Action

• Otrivin Menthol Nasal Spray (10ml metering spray bottle, 1mg/ml Xylometazoline HCl) delivers targeted vascular decongestion combined with cooling aromatic vapors:
• Alpha-Adrenergic Vasoconstriction (Xylometazoline HCl): Direct-acting sympathomimetic amine that selectively binds to $\alpha_1$ and $\alpha_2$-adrenergic receptors on vascular smooth muscle within the nasal mucosa. This induces rapid constriction of dilated arterioles, reducing tissue swelling, mucosal edema, and fluid exudation.
• Sensory Cooling & Airflow Enhancement (Menthol & Eucalyptol): Features aromatic menthol and eucalyptol vapors that stimulate cutaneous TRPM8 cold-sensing receptors in nasal air passages, producing an immediate subjective perception of increased airflow and cooling freshness.
• Rapid Onset & Prolonged Action: Begins unblocking nasal passages in as little as 2 minutes, maintaining therapeutic vasoconstriction and airway patency for up to 10 to 12 hours without significant systemic bioavailability.

Clinical Indications

• Otrivin Menthol Spray 10ml is indicated for:
• Rapid, long-lasting relief of nasal congestion associated with common colds, influenza, and allergic or non-allergic rhinitis
• Facilitating sinus drainage and clearing paranasal passages in acute or chronic sinusitis
• Adjunctive therapy in middle ear infections (otitis media) to decongest the Eustachian tube orifice

Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions

Administration:

• Blow nose gently to clear nostrils. Remove protective cap, hold bottle upright, and insert nozzle into one nostril. Spray once while breathing in gently through the nose, then repeat in the other nostril. Clean nozzle and replace cap after each use.

Recommended Dosage:

• Adults and Adolescents over 12 years: Apply 1 spray into each nostril 2 to 3 times daily as needed. Do not exceed 3 applications per nostril in 24 hours.
• Children under 12 years: Not recommended; use pediatric formulations instead.

Precautions & Warnings:

• For nasal topical use only; do not spray into eyes or mouth. Do not use continuously for more than 5 to 7 consecutive days; prolonged or excessive use may trigger rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa) and chronic mucosal damage. Contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, dry rhinitis (rhinitis sicca), or following transsphenoidal hypophysectomy. Exercise caution in patients with severe hypertension, cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism, or diabetes mellitus. Store below $25^\circ\text{C}$ in a cool, dry place.
