Overview & Mechanism of Action
- Uriflow Liquid ($100\text{ml}$ bottle containing systemic alkalinizing citrate salts) acts on renal tubular filtration and systemic fluid chemistry to alter urinary $\text{pH}$:
- Systemic & Urinary Alkalinization: Citrate ions undergo hepatic metabolization into bicarbonate ($\text{HCO}_3^-$), increasing systemic plasma buffering capacity and elevating urinary $\text{pH}$ to a less acidic, neutral-to-alkaline range ($\text{pH } 6.5 - 7.0$).
- Dysuria & Urethral Irritation Mitigation: Neutralizes highly acidic urine that causes severe burning sensations, bladder spasms, and discomfort across inflamed urothelial mucosa during acute lower urinary tract infections (cystitis).
- Nephrolithiasis Prophylaxis & Dissolution: Elevated urinary citrate levels bind free calcium ions to form soluble complexes, preventing calcium oxalate supersaturation and crystal nucleation. Simultaneously, elevated urinary $\text{pH}$ converts insoluble uric acid into soluble urate salts, preventing uric acid stone formation and aiding in the dissolution of existing urate gravel.
Clinical Indications & Uses
- Uriflow Liquid 100ml is indicated for:
- Symptomatic relief of burning urination (dysuria), urgency, and bladder irritation associated with urinary tract infections
- Prophylaxis and dissolution management of uric acid renal calculi and calcium oxalate stone recurrence
- Adjunctive alkalinizing therapy in hyperuricemic conditions and chronic gout to enhance urinary uric acid excretion
Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions
Administration:
- Always dilute the prescribed dose in a full glass of water ($150\text{ml}$ to $200\text{ml}$) and drink immediately after main meals to prevent gastric upset.
Recommended Dosage:
- Adults: Take $10\text{ml}$ to $15\text{ml}$ (2 to 3 teaspoons) diluted in water 3 times daily after meals, or as directed by a physician.
- Children: Take $5\text{ml}$ (1 teaspoon) diluted in water 2 to 3 times daily after meals under medical supervision.
Precautions & Warnings:
- For oral administration after dilution only. Contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, hyperkalemia, untreated Addison's disease, severe myocardial damage, or acute dehydration. Use with caution in patients requiring sodium/potassium dietary restriction or those taking ACE inhibitors, ARBs, or potassium-sparing diuretics. Store below $25^\circ\text{C}$ in a cool, dry place protected from direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
