Voltaren Emugel 50g contains Diclofenac Diethylamine ($1.16\%\text{ w/w}$) in a cooling emulgel base, designed to penetrate deep into inflamed subcutaneous tissues to relieve localized joint and muscle pain, reduce swelling, and accelerate movement recovery.

Overview & Mechanism of Action

  • Voltaren Emugel ($50\text{g}$ tube containing Diclofenac Diethylamine $1.16\%\text{ w/w}$, equivalent to Diclofenac Sodium $1\%\text{ w/w}$) features a specialized dual-action emulgel technology (oil-in-water emulsion combined with an aqueous gel matrix) for rapid transdermal penetration and targeted analgesic delivery:
  • Cyclooxygenase (COX) Inhibition: Diclofenac acts as a potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that non-selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase-1 ($\text{COX-1}$) and cyclooxygenase-2 ($\text{COX-2}$) enzymes. This blocks the cascade synthesis of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, specifically Prostaglandin $\text{E}_2$ ($\text{PGE}_2$), at the site of tissue injury.
  • Targeted Transdermal Absorption: The lipophilic diethylamine salt paired with the specialized emulgel base penetrates through the epidermal skin layer into underlying synovial fluids, joint capsules, and muscle fibers, accumulating active drug concentrations directly within target inflamed tissues while minimizing systemic exposure.
  • Cooling & Soothing Barrier: Combines the soothing effect of a gel with the moisturizing properties of an emulsion, providing immediate localized cooling upon application to relieve acute burning or throbbing pain.

Clinical Indications & Uses

  • Voltaren Emugel 50g is indicated for:
  • Relief of pain, inflammation, and localized edema associated with acute trauma to tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints (e.g., sprains, strains, bruises, and sports injuries)
  • Symptomatic management of localized soft tissue rheumatism, including tendonitis (tennis elbow), tenosynovitis, bursitis, and periarthropathy
  • Relief of localized osteoarthritis symptoms affecting superficial peripheral joints, such as the knees, ankles, wrist, and fingers

Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions

Administration:

  • Gently squeeze a cherry- to walnut-sized amount ($2\text{g}$ to $4\text{g}$) from the tube, apply smoothly onto clean, dry skin covering the painful or swollen area, and rub gently until fully absorbed. Wash hands thoroughly after application unless treating hands or fingers.

Recommended Dosage:

  • Adults and Adolescents 14 years and older: Apply 3 to 4 times daily as needed. Do not use for more than 14 days for soft tissue injuries/rheumatism or 21 days for osteoarthritic pain without medical consultation.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • For external topical use only. Do not apply to open wounds, infected or eczematous skin, burns, or mucous membranes. Do not use with tight, occlusive dressings. CONTRAINDICATED during the third trimester of pregnancy due to systemic absorption risk causing premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus. Avoid exposure of treated skin to direct sunlight or sunlamps during therapy to reduce the risk of photosensitivity reactions. Store below $30^\circ\text{C}$ in a cool place away from direct heat. Keep out of reach of children.
