Weltek Fibre 90g is an osmotic laxative and prebiotic fiber powder containing Lactitol Monohydrate to gently promote bowel movement, soften hard stools, and support intestinal microbial flora without causing habituation or abdominal cramping.

1

Overview & Mechanism of Action

  • Weltek Fibre ($90\text{g}$ oral powder formulation containing bio-active Lactitol Monohydrate disaccharide polyol) acts through selective colonic microbial fermentation and osmotic fluid mobilization:
  • Osmotic Water Retention & Stool Softening: Lactitol remains unabsorbed through the upper gastrointestinal tract until reaching the colon, where it creates an osmotic gradient that draws water into the lumen, increasing fecal volume and softening stool consistency.
  • Colonic Fermentation & Peristaltic Stimulation: Colonic microflora metabolize lactitol into short-chain fatty acids ($\text{SCFAs}$) such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate. This lowers colonic $\text{pH}$, mildly stimulates peristaltic contractions, and accelerates intestinal transit time.
  • Prebiotic Microbiome & Ammonia Reduction: Acts as a prebiotic substrate favoring the proliferation of beneficial Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. In hepatic encephalopathy, the decreased colonic $\text{pH}$ traps toxic circulating ammonia ($\text{NH}_3$) as unabsorbable ammonium ions ($\text{NH}_4^+$), facilitating its fecal excretion.

Clinical Indications & Uses

  • Weltek Fibre 90g is indicated for:
  • Symptomatic treatment of chronic functional constipation and bowel irregularity in adults and pediatric patients
  • Prevention and management of hepatic encephalopathy (portal-systemic encephalopathy) by reducing systemic blood ammonia levels
  • Softening of stools for patients with painful anorectal conditions (e.g., hemorrhoids, anal fissures) or post-surgical bowel maintenance

Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions

Administration:

  • Dissolve the recommended daily dose in a glass of water, fruit juice, tea, or mix into soft food (yogurt, porridge). Ensure adequate fluid intake throughout the day to support optimal osmotic action.

Recommended Dosage:

  • Adults (Constipation): Initial dose is $10\text{g}$ to $20\text{g}$ daily (taken in a single dose at breakfast or evening meal), adjusted to $10\text{g}$ daily for maintenance once regular soft stools are established.Hepatic Encephalopathy: $0.5\text{g}$ to $0.7\text{g}$ per kg of body weight daily in 3 divided doses, titrated to achieve 2 to 3 soft stools daily.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • For oral administration only. Contraindicated in patients with galactosaemia, bowel obstruction (ileus), gastrointestinal perforation, or unexplained abdominal pain. Flatulence, abdominal bloating, or mild cramps may occur during the initial days of treatment as the intestinal flora adapts. Overdosage may cause diarrhea and secondary electrolyte imbalance; reduce dosage if loose stools occur. Store below $25^\circ\text{C}$ in a cool, dry place away from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
