Whitfield's Ointment 20g is a classic topical antifungal and keratolytic preparation containing Benzoic Acid (6%) and Salicylic Acid (3%) to clear superficial fungal skin infections, shed thickened hyperkeratotic tissue, and relieve scaling.

Overview & Mechanism of Action

  • Whitfield's Ointment ($20\text{g}$ tube containing a synergistic $2:1$ ratio of Benzoic Acid $6\%\text{ w/w}$ and Salicylic Acid $3\%\text{ w/w}$ in an fatty base) treats superficial dermatophyte infections through combined antifungal and desquamative actions:
  • Fungistatic Action (Benzoic Acid): Exerts direct fungistatic activity against common dermatophytes, including Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton species. Benzoic acid inhibits fungal cellular enzyme pathways and disrupts membrane integrity, halting fungal proliferation.
  • Keratolytic Desquamation (Salicylic Acid): Acts as a potent beta-hydroxy acid keratolytic that dissolves intercellular desmosomes and softens the stratum corneum. By stripping away thickened, hyperkeratotic dead skin layers, salicylic acid physically removes fungal hyphae embedded in superficial keratin.
  • Synergistic Tissue Penetration: The desquamative effect of Salicylic Acid enhances the deep penetration of Benzoic Acid into underlying epidermal layers, preventing fungal re-colonization and restoring normal skin exfoliation dynamics.

Clinical Indications & Uses

  • Whitfield's Ointment 20g is indicated for:
  • Treatment of dry, scaling, or hyperkeratotic fungal infections of the skin, such as tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea corporis (ringworm), and tinea cruris (jock itch)
  • Softening and shedding thickened skin patches associated with chronic superficial mycoses
  • Relieving localized scaling, itching, and epidermal roughness caused by dermatophyte colonization

Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions

Administration:

  • Clean and thoroughly dry the affected skin area. Apply a thin layer of Whitfield's Ointment and gently rub in until absorbed. Wash hands immediately after application unless treating the hands.

Recommended Frequency:

  • Apply 2 times daily (morning and evening) or as directed by a healthcare professional.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • For external topical use only. Do not apply to acute inflammatory skin conditions, open wounds, broken or severely cracked skin, or near sensitive mucous membranes and eyes. May cause mild transient localized burning, stinging, or skin irritation upon application. Discontinue use if severe cutaneous sensitization or allergic contact dermatitis occurs. Avoid prolonged use over extensive body surface areas to prevent systemic salicylate absorption. Store below $25^\circ\text{C}$ in a cool, dry place. Keep out of reach of children.
