The Pulse Oxy Meter (Eros) is a compact, non-invasive fingertip pulse oximeter engineered to measure peripheral blood oxygen saturation and pulse rate with clinical precision and real-time digital display.

Overview & Mechanism of Action

  • The Pulse Oxy Meter (Eros) (portable, battery-operated fingertip pulse oximeter designed for rapid vital signs assessment) utilizes dual-wavelength optical spectrophotometry:
  • Photoplethysmographic Spectrophotometry: Emits two specific light wavelengths—red (660 nm) and infrared (940 nm)—through the vascular bed of the finger to a sensitive photodetector. Oxygenated hemoglobin and deoxygenated hemoglobin absorb these light spectrums at distinct rates, allowing the device to calculate arterial oxygen saturation instantly.
  • Arterial Pulsatile Waveform Analysis (Plethysmogram): Isolates the pulsatile arterial blood signal from static venous blood, bone, and soft tissue absorption. It translates microvascular volume fluctuations into a real-time pulse rate, in beats per minute) alongside a visual plethysmographic bar graph or wave.
  • Ergonomic Sensor & Power Efficiency: Features a spring-hinged chamber lined with medical-grade, latex-free silicone to accommodate various digit sizes comfortably, paired with an auto-power-off feature to preserve battery life.

Clinical Indications & Uses

  • The Pulse Oxy Meter (Eros) is indicated for:
  • Non-invasive routine spot-checking of peripheral blood oxygen levels in individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses (COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis)
  • Early detection and home tracking of hypoxemia during acute viral or bacterial lower respiratory infections
  • Monitoring pulse rate and blood oxygenation during exercise stress tests, high-altitude sports, or post-anesthesia recovery

Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions

Administration:

  • Insert one clean finger (index, middle, or ring finger) into the rubberized finger chamber with the fingernail facing upward toward the display screen. Press the single power button to activate. Rest the hand completely still on a flat surface during the 5 to 10 second measurement cycle.

Reading Interpretation:

  • Normal baseline levels for healthy adults typically range between 95% and 100%. If resting readings consistently fall below 94%, or if sudden shortness of breath occurs, seek immediate medical attention.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • For non-invasive spot-checking monitoring only. Dark nail polish, artificial acrylic nails, cold extremities (poor peripheral perfusion), severe muscle tremors, or direct exposure to intense ambient light can cause inaccurate or failed readings. Not intended for continuous overnight sleep apnea diagnostics unless paired with dedicated recording software. Clean the silicone chamber with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe between patients. Keep out of reach of children.
