Betadine Ointment 15g is a trusted, broad-spectrum topical antiseptic ointment containing Povidone-Iodine 10% w/w, formulated to rapidly destroy bacteria, viruses, and fungi, prevent wound infections, and promote clean skin healing.

1

Overview & Mechanism of Action

  • Betadine Ointment (15g tube) provides gold-standard microbicidal protection to prevent and treat localized skin infections across various superficial wounds:
  • Broad-Spectrum Pathogen Eradication (Povidone-Iodine 10% w/w): Functions as an iodophor complex that slowly releases elemental free iodine ($\text{I}_2$) upon contact with skin tissue. Free iodine rapidly diffuses into microorganisms, oxidizing essential cell wall proteins, functional enzymes, and amino acids to cause irreversible microbial death.
  • Non-Resistance Microbicidal Action: Effectively kills Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, yeast, protozoa, bacterial spores, and viruses without inducing microbial drug resistance or bacterial cross-resistance.
  • Moist Protective Barrier: The smooth, water-soluble ointment base forms a protective layer over broken skin, maintaining a healthy moisture balance that supports tissue repair and prevents dressings from sticking to sensitive wound beds.

Clinical Indications

  • Betadine Ointment 15g is indicated for:
  • Topical treatment and infection prevention for minor cuts, scrapes, skin abrasions, lacerations, and minor burns (scalds)
  • Prophylaxis and management of secondary bacterial or fungal infections in chronic skin lesions, including pressure ulcers (bedsores), venous ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers
  • Infection control and dressing care for minor post-surgical incisions, suture sites, or traumatic skin injuries

Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions

Administration:

  • Cleanse the affected wound area gently with water or sterile saline and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of Betadine Ointment directly to the affected area 1 to 3 times daily. The treated area may be left uncovered or covered with a sterile gauze bandage as required.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • For external topical use only. Do not apply over extensive body surface areas, deep puncture wounds, or severe third-degree burns without medical advice. Contraindicated in patients with active thyroid disorders (such as hyperthyroidism, thyroid adenoma, or Graves' disease), known iodine allergy, or those undergoing radioactive iodine therapy. Avoid contact with eyes. Discontinue use if localized skin rash, swelling, or severe irritation occurs. Store below $25^\circ\text{C}$ in a cool, dry place. Keep out of reach of children.
