Chromic Catgut 2/0 RB (Box of 12) is a natural, absorbable sterile surgical suture treated with chromic salts for extended tensile strength retention. Fitted with a Round Body needle, it provides smooth passage through delicate soft tissues and internal organs.

1

Overview & Mechanism of Action

  • Chromic Catgut 2/0 RB is a sterile, absorbable surgical suture composed of purified connective tissue (collagen) derived from the submucosal layer of bovine or ovine intestines. Designed for internal tissue adaptation, its functional characteristics include:
  • Chromic Tanning Process: The collagen strands are treated with trivalent chromium salts before spinning. This chromic treatment delays enzymatic digestion by endogenous lysosomal enzymes, significantly increasing tensile strength retention and minimizing early tissue reactivity compared to plain catgut.
  • Tensile Strength & Absorption Profile: Retains effective wound support for approximately 14 to 21 days following implantation. Complete mass absorption occurs between 60 and 90 days via enzymatic breakdown and phagocytosis.
  • Round Body (RB) / Taper Point Needle: The attached 2/0 RB needle features a smooth, round cross-section that pierces soft tissues by separating tissue fibers rather than cutting them, reducing puncture bleeding and tissue trauma.
  • Clinical Indications
  • Chromic Catgut 2/0 RB Sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including:
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery: Anastomoses and mucosal closures along the stomach and intestinal tract
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology: Episiotomy repair, vaginal wall reconstruction, and uterine wall closure
  • Urological Surgery: Bladder wall approximation and kidney/prostate ligation
  • Ophthalmic & Oral Surgery: Subcuticular and mucosal tissue closure where absorbable support is required
  • Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions
  • Administration: For professional surgical use only. Open the sterile foil sachet under strict aseptic conditions. Uncoil the suture strand gently to minimize memory loops prior to suturing.
  • Contraindications: Contraindicated in procedures requiring extended or permanent mechanical tissue support (such as cardiovascular or neurological surgery). Do not use in patients with known sensitivity or allergies to collagen or chromium.
  • Precautions: Single-use sterile product; do not re-sterilize or reuse. As a natural organic material, catgut may evoke a mild inflammatory reaction compared to synthetic absorbable polymers (such as Polyglactin/Vicryl). Avoid knot abrasion with surgical instruments to maintain tensile integrity.
