Overview & Mechanism of Action

  • Chlorpheniramine Expectorant (Pirinox) 100ml is a liquid oral combination formulation engineered to facilitate mucus clearance and relieve bronchial discomfort associated with upper respiratory tract infections and allergic coughs. Its active therapeutic actions include:
  • Chlorpheniramine Maleate (2.5 mg / 5 ml): A potent first-generation H1-receptor antihistamine that competitively blocks histamine receptors on bronchial and vascular smooth muscle. This prevents allergic reactions, reduces mucosal swelling, and stops persistent runny nose, sneezing, and throat irritation.
  • Ammonium Chloride (125 mg / 5 ml): Functions as a reflex expectorant. It irritates the gastric mucosa, reflexively stimulating bronchial secretory glands to increase fluid secretions, thereby thinning dense phlegm and aiding its expulsion via ciliary motion.
  • Sodium Citrate (55 mg / 5 ml) & Menthol: Acts as a mucolytic liquefying agent that liquefies tenacious mucous plugs in the respiratory tract while providing a soothing, cooling effect on inflamed pharyngeal tissues.
  • Clinical Indications
  • Chlorpheniramine Expectorant (Pirinox) 100ml is indicated for:
  • Symptomatic relief of productive (wet) coughs accompanied by sticky, thick bronchial secretions
  • Easing chest tightness and mucus accumulation in acute bronchitis, tracheobronchitis, and the common cold
  • Managing cough fits triggered by seasonal allergic rhinitis, post-nasal drip, and throat tickle
  • Promoting airway clearance during viral upper respiratory tract infections
