Alugel Oral Suspension 100ml is a fast-acting antacid containing Aluminium Hydroxide Gel to neutralize excess stomach acid, coat and protect irritated mucosal tissue, relieve heartburn, and assist in intestinal phosphate binding.

1

Overview & Mechanism of Action

  • Alugel Oral Suspension (100ml bottle) is an oral antacid and cytoprotective formulation engineered to manage gastric acid hypersecretion and hyperphosphatemia:
  • Gastric Acid Neutralization (Aluminium Hydroxide Gel): Reacts chemically with gastric hydrochloric acid ($HCl$) to form aluminium chloride and water. This raises the intragastric pH, suppressing pepsin proteolytic activity and providing rapid relief from acid irritation.
  • Mucosal Surface Cytoprotection: The viscous gel formulation coats the stomach lining and peptic ulcer sites, forming a physical barrier that shields raw tissue from ongoing acid, pepsin, and bile acid erosion.
  • Intestinal Phosphate Binding: In the small intestine, aluminium ions bind dietary phosphate to form insoluble aluminium phosphate complexes that are excreted in feces. This prevents systemic phosphate absorption, helping manage elevated serum phosphate levels in patients with impaired renal function.

Clinical Indications

  • Alugel Oral Suspension 100ml is indicated for:
  • Symptomatic management of gastric hyperacidity, acid indigestion, heartburn, and acute or chronic gastritis
  • Adjuvant management of pain and irritation associated with gastric and duodenal peptic ulcers
  • Control of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or renal insufficiency under medical supervision

Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions

Administration:

  • Shake the bottle thoroughly before each dose. Take orally between meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a healthcare professional.

Recommended Dosage:

  • Adults & Adolescents over 12 years: 5ml to 10ml (1 to 2 teaspoonfuls) taken 3 to 4 times daily, 20 to 60 minutes after meals and at bedtime.
  • Children under 12 years: Use only as directed by a physician.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • May cause constipation due to the astringent action of aluminium; ensure adequate fluid intake. Avoid prolonged high-dose use in patients with severe renal impairment to prevent aluminium systemic accumulation and toxicity. High doses can lead to hypophosphatemia. Antacids decrease the oral absorption of other medications (e.g., tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, digoxin, iron salts); space other oral drugs at least 2 hours apart from Alugel. Store below 30°C in a dry place. Keep bottle tightly closed and protect from freezing. Keep out of reach of children.
