Eusol Solution 500ml (Edinburgh University Solution of Lime) is a classic antiseptic and debriding solution combining Chlorinated Lime and Boric Acid to cleanse infected wounds, break down sloughy tissue, and control bacterial bioburden in chronic ulcers.

Overview & Mechanism of Action

  • Eusol Solution (500ml bottle) delivers reliable antimicrobial and proteolytic action designed for irrigation, cleansing, and debridement of infected or slough-covered wounds:
  • Chlorine-Releasing Antimicrobial Action (Chlorinated Lime): Generates active hypochlorous acid ($\text{HOCl}$) and free chlorine upon contact with organic matter, disrupting bacterial cell membranes, denaturing essential enzymes, and demonstrating broad-spectrum microbicidal activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi.
  • Proteolytic Debridement & Slough Clearance: Assists in dissolving non-viable necrotic tissue, fibrinous slough, and purulent exudate, facilitating soft-tissue debridement and preparing the wound bed for granulation tissue formation.
  • pH Stabilization & Buffering (Boric Acid): Acts as a chemical buffer to stabilize hypochlorous acid in solution, maintaining an optimal acidic microenvironment that enhances antimicrobial potency while controlling localized wound malodor.

Clinical Indications

  • Eusol Solution 500ml is indicated for:
  • Cleansing and moist debridement of sloughy, infected, or necrotic wounds, including vascular leg ulcers and pressure ulcers (bedsores)
  • Antiseptic irrigation of infected surgical wounds, abscess cavities, and contaminated traumatic lesions
  • Control of bacterial bioburden and reduction of foul wound odor in exuding chronic skin lesions

Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions

Administration:

  • Apply as a wet dressing or irrigation solution directly to the wound using sterile gauze. Allow the solution to remain in contact with the wound bed for the duration specified by a healthcare professional before applying appropriate secondary dressings.

Precautions & Warnings:

  • For external topical wound care only. Do not ingest, inject, or use in deep body cavities or eye irrigation. Avoid prolonged continuous use on clean, granulating tissue, as unbuffered chlorine solutions may inhibit fibroblast proliferation and delay re-epithelialization. Discontinue use once necrotic tissue is cleared and healthy granulation appears. Store below 25°C in a cool place protected from direct light, with the container tightly capped to prevent chlorine degradation. Keep out of reach of children.
