Overview & Mechanism of Action
- Hexichlor Mouthwash ($250\text{ml}$ oral solution containing Chlorhexidine Gluconate $0.2\%\text{ w/v}$) delivers long-acting, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity across the oral cavity:
- Cationic Cell Wall Disruption: Chlorhexidine is a cationic bisbiguanide antimicrobial that binds electrostatically to the negatively charged cell walls of Gram-positive and Gram-negative oral bacteria. This disrupts membrane integrity, causes osmotic destabilization, and induces lethal leakage of essential intracellular components.
- High Salivary Substantivity: Adsorbs strongly to hydroxyapatite in tooth enamel, oral mucosal surfaces, and salivary pellicle proteins, establishing a slow-release depot that maintains microbicidal concentrations in saliva for $8\text{--}12\text{ hours}$.
- Plaque Inhibition & Anti-Gingivitis Action: Prevents bacterial colonization and pellicle maturation, inhibiting the accumulation of dental plaque (biofilm) and suppressing inflammatory cytokine cascades in gingival tissue.
Clinical Indications & Uses
- Hexichlor Mouthwash 250ml is indicated for:
- Treatment and management of acute and chronic gingivitis, characterized by bleeding, swollen, or tender gums
- Post-operative oral hygiene and plaque prevention following dental extractions, periodontal surgery, or oral trauma
- Management of recurring aphthous ulcers, mucosal inflammation, and adjunctive therapy in oral candidiasis
Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions
Administration:
- Thoroughly rinse the mouth with $10\text{ml}$ to $15\text{ml}$ of undiluted solution for 30 to 60 seconds twice daily (morning and evening), then spit out completely. Do not swallow. Refrain from rinsing with water, eating, drinking, or smoking for 30 minutes post-application.
Recommended Dosage:
- Adults and Children over 12 years: $10\text{--}15\text{ml}$ twice daily after brushing teeth.
Precautions & Warnings:
- For oral topical rinse only; strictly do not swallow. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) found in standard toothpastes inactivates chlorhexidine; rinse thoroughly with water or wait at least 30 minutes between brushing and using Hexichlor. Prolonged continuous use ($>14\text{ days}$) may cause temporary dysgeusia (taste alteration) or superficial brown staining of teeth, tongue, and dental restorations, which can be removed by professional dental polishing. Store below $25^\circ\text{C}$ in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
