Overview & Mechanism of Action

• Tincture of Iodine ($500\text{ml}$ bottle containing elemental Iodine $2\%\text{ w/v}$ and Sodium Iodide $2.5\%\text{ w/v}$ in an ethanol/water solvent system) provides broad-spectrum topical microbicidal activity:
• Halogenation & Protein Oxidation: Free elemental iodine ($\text{I}_2$) rapidly penetrates microbial cell walls, iodinating amino acids and oxidizing key structural proteins, nucleic acids, and membrane lipids, resulting in rapid pathogen cell death.
• Broad-Spectrum Microbicidal Range: Demonstrates potent, fast-acting germicidal efficacy against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, bacterial spores, fungi, yeast, protozoa, and enveloped viruses.
• Alcohol Solvent Enhancement: The hydro-alcoholic vehicle lowers liquid surface tension, enabling rapid penetration into skin micro-crevices while delivering additive antiseptic cleansing.

Clinical Indications & Uses

• Tincture of Iodine 500ml is indicated for:
• Topical skin antisepsis prior to surgical incisions, venipuncture, blood collection, or invasive medical procedures
• Disinfection of minor superficial cuts, scrapes, abrasions, and small insect bites to prevent localized bacterial contamination
• Emergency topical sanitization of intact skin around minor traumatic wounds in clinical and field settings

Usage Guidance & Safety Precautions

Administration:

• Apply topically to intact skin using a sterile cotton swab, gauze pad, or applicator. Allow the solution to dry completely on the skin surface to ensure maximum antiseptic efficacy and to minimize tissue irritation under occlusive dressings.

Recommended Dosage:

• Adults and Children 2 years and older: Apply a small amount to the affected area or pre-operative skin site 1 to 2 times daily as needed.

Precautions & Warnings:

• For external topical use only. Do not swallow or inject. Contraindicated in individuals with severe hypersensitivity to iodine, thyroid dysfunction (such as hyperthyroidism), or during concurrent radioiodine therapy. Do not apply under tight occlusive dressings or over large, open deep wounds, burned skin, or mucous membranes due to the risk of systemic iodine absorption and tissue toxicity. May permanently stain fabrics and temporarily stain skin brown. Store below $25^\circ\text{C}$ in a cool, dark place away from open flames or heat sources (flammable solution). Keep out of reach of children.
